I don't think that inappropriate in the least.
An Alumni Book? Why would anyone care about the 100s of people they didn't know? Even if you had classes together, even if you did a project for one of those classes together? Who cares?
Not inappropriate at all.
You were clearly provoked and had to respond appropriately. You didn't want the message to get jumbled in the transaction.
